At Write, giving has never felt separate from our business. It has always been part of our DNA. For more than 35 years, we’ve believed in using the power of words for good.
Sometimes that means helping organisations communicate more clearly and more humanely. Sometimes it means creating initiatives that raise standards and encourage better communication more broadly. And sometimes it means giving in ways that make a direct, practical difference to people’s lives.
That commitment has taken different forms over the years.
One of the most visible is our hosting of the annual Plain Language Awards. Conceiving and hosting the Awards is one way we live out our belief in using the power of words for good. It allows us to support clearer communication far beyond the work we could do alone as a small business.
Our commitment to making a difference takes other forms too. Over the years we have regularly supported charities all over New Zealand, and we are thrilled to have now joined B1G1 for the next chapter in our giving story.
B1G1 founder Masami Sato originally inspired us with what she calls ‘the power of small’. In an economy where many businesses aren’t able to make large donations, it can be easy to think that small acts of giving don’t matter. But B1G1 reminds us that it is far better to do something than nothing — and that many small impacts add up to a big difference. That realisation was energising for us!
It was an easy decision for us. Impact is already woven into our business model; our business mission speaks about impact; and we always try to measure the effect of our work on people and society. Giving is also consistent with our B Corp commitments, so adding B1G1 has given us a practical and visible way to live out that part of our purpose.
We’ve now connected B1G1 projects to all our services, so our giving happens whenever a client engages with us. Whether someone joins a workshop or subscribes to our Write Online elearning, books a content project, or attends one of our live Q&As, that interaction helps support practical projects around the world.
This matters to us, because we know many of our clients care not only about quality and results, but also about working with businesses whose values align with their own.
Our team has embraced B1G1 giving wholeheartedly — not only because we’re proud of making a difference, but because we hope finding out more about B1G1 projects might encourage other businesses to do something similar.
We support a range of causes through B1G1, but education is where the connection runs deepest. Education is the most natural fit for us — supporting literacy and learning through B1G1 feels like a natural extension of the work we do every day.
A large part of our work is educational. We help people build the skills and confidence to communicate more effectively, and we see every day how learning can change lives. At the most fundamental level, literacy changes lives too. Being able to read and write opens doors, creates opportunity, and supports dignity and independence.
For us, embedding giving into our business is not about making grand claims. It’s about making sure the work we do has value in more than one direction. We want our clients to know what it means when they choose Write. They’re choosing a team committed to clarity, skills development, and results — but we also seek to create practical, measurable impact beyond the brief.
That is the power of small.
And it’s one more way we try to make every project count.
